Fertility clinics require an educational consultation for clients considering third party reproduction—donor eggs, sperm or embryos. This is for the best interests of the clients and any donor conceived children.

It is usually an hour Zoom appointment. Because it is education, insurance does not cover it. The fee of $250 includes the hour on zoom, related forms, paperwork sent to the referring clinic, a copy of topics discussed with resources for the future.

Some concerns that are covered in the consultations include:

• How important is grieving the loss of a genetic connection with any future child(ren)?

• Will I feel like the donor conceived child is mine?

• What are the benefits and risks of using an identified vs. a non-identified donor?

• Should I share with the child(ren) that they are donor conceived, and if so, at what ages?

• What is in the best interests of the child(ren)?

• What resources are helpful in talking with child(ren)?

• What if the child wants to contact the donor when they’re an adult?
